Understanding Balance Billing (“Surprise Billing”)
Washington State protects patients from most forms of balance billing, sometimes called “surprise billing.” This can occur when you receive emergency medical care and unknowingly get a bill from an out-of-network provider.
To help you understand your rights, review the Balance Billing Consumer Notice, provided by the Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) of Washington State. This notice explains:
- What balance billing is
- When providers can and cannot balance bill
- Your protections under Washington State law
- Steps to take if you receive a bill that doesn’t look right
