DATE: 03/30/2026 CONTACT: Laine Desilets, Captain/Public Information Officer – skfr_media@skfr.org 360-509-3981 MEDIA RELEASE [Port Orchard, Wash.] In the late evening hours of March 29, South Kitsap Fire and Rescue (SKFR) crews responded to a residential structure fire in a home located off of Glenwood Rd SW in Port Orchard. Initial reports stated that the house had one known occupant that was unaccounted for. The first arriving firefighters were met with thick smoke and heavy fire from most all of the structure’s openings. Despite these difficult conditions, initial crews made access to the home to perform a search of the residence but deteriorating conditions soon forced them to leave due to the fire’s rapid growth. The fire was difficult in nature and took crews 90 minutes to control. There are no fire hydrants in the area. However, water tenders are dispatched with all of SKFR’s fire responses. These large tanker trucks, each carrying thousands of gallons of water, were able to supply water to the fire engines on scene. Sadly, one adult perished in the incident. SKFR joins with the community in mourning this tragic loss. Our thoughts are with all those involved. At this time, the scene has been turned over to the Kitsap County Fire Marshals Office for investigation. We would like to thank our mutual aid partners, Key Peninsula Fire as well as Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One for their response. SKFR also encourages the community to be fire safe. Plan and practice a home fire escape with at least two ways out of every room and one meeting place outside. Make sure homes have working and well-maintained smoke alarms that are less than ten years old.
